Utah Football Hosts UCLA This Saturday

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailSALT LAKE CITY-Saturday, No. 8 (The Associated Press)/No. 9 (Coaches poll) Utah (8-1, 5-1 in Pac-12 play) returns to action after a bye by hosting UCLA (4-5, 4-2 in Pac-12) at Rice-Eccles Stadium.The Utes are 96-35 (.732) all-time in what is now known as Rice-Eccles Stadium and are 68-24 (.739) at home in the Kyle Whittingham era (2004-present).The Top 10 Utes are 5-0 at home this season and have won nine consecutive home games, including 11 of their last 12.A win against UCLA Saturday will make the Utes .500 (40-40) all-time against fellow Pac-12 schools as a conference member (2011-present).Utah ranks 41st nationally in scoring offense (33.1 points per game).Senior signal-caller Tyler Huntley continues to impress in various ways. He has completed 73.8 percent of his passes (141-191, 2nd nationally) for 2,062 yards, 11 touchdowns and an interception.Huntley is sixth nationally in passing efficiency (182.5) as well for the Utes, while also running for four scores.Senior tailback Zack Moss (137 car, 828 yards, 11 TD’s) ranks 30th nationally with 6.04 yards per carry.The Utes’ leading receivers are sophomore wide-out Bryan Thompson (16 rec, 431 yards, 3 TD’s) and sophomore tight end Brant Kuithe (17 rec, 274 yards, 3 TD’s).Freshman kicker Jadon Redding has made 8 of his 11 field goal attempts on the season and all 36 of his PAT attempts.As has been the case throughout the season, the Utes’ major strength remains the defense.Utah surrenders only 12.2 points per game (6th nationally) and 56 yards per game on the ground (first nationally).Senior defensive end Bradlee Anae (8 sacks, forced fumble) is the Utes’ sack leader. Senior defensive back Julian Blackmon leads the Utes in interceptions (3) and also has a forced fumble on the season.Also with forced fumbles for the Utes on the season are senior defensive tackle John Penisini, senior defensive tackle Leki Fotu, sophomore defensive back R.J. Hubert and senior defensive back Josh Nurse (one apiece).The resurgent Bruins come into Saturday’s game having won three straight games. They have been at Stanford (34-16) and home against Arizona State (42-32) and Colorado (31-14) respectively while they are also coming off of a bye.The Bruins are tied for 65th nationally in scoring offense (29.3 points per game) with Ohio.The Bruins have arisen from their moribund 1-6 start to the season because of the emergence of sophomore quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The speedster has also run for three scores on the season.The product of the storied Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas has completed 60.4 percent of his passes (147-243) for 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions.Redshirt senior tailback Joshua Kelley (176 car, 861 yards, 10 TD’s) carries the water for the Bruins with redshirt junior back Demetric Felton (75 car, 331 yards, TD) also excelling on the ground for UCLA.Felton also leads the Bruins in receptions (39) and receiving yards (471) and has three scoring grabs for good measure.Redshirt freshman receiver Kyle Philips (36 rec, 404 yards, 5 TD’s) leads UCLA in scoring receptions.Canadian national, senior kicker JJ Molson, has made 6 of his 10 field goal attempts on the season and all 34 of his PAT attempts for the Bruins.The Bruins rank 95th nationally in scoring defense (32 points per game), tying them with Colorado State.Redshirt senior linebacker Josh Woods and redshirt junior defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa have 3.5 sacks apiece to pace UCLA in that category.Senior linebacker Krys Barnes, Woods, redshirt sophomore defensive back Jay Shaw and junior defensive back Darnay Holmes each have an interception for the Bruins.Sophomore defensive back Stephan Blaylock (2 forced fumbles) leads UCLA in that category.The Bruins lead the all-time series 11-6 and are 5-3 all-time at Salt Lake City.
