Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest There are many diverse paths that lead Ohio FFA members to the organization and even more paths that will take them far beyond their FFA years. The one thing they will all have in common, forever, is the pride of donning that signature blue corduroy jacket. As we get ready to highlight thousands of these young people next month at the Ohio FFA Convention, I found out about one of those legendary jackets that may have chosen a path all its own.One of my friends on Facebook posted about her brother-in-law taking a trip to Florence, Italy, and noticing a fellow walking the streets in what wouldn’t be an unusual sight here in the U.S. — an FFA jacket. What made this jacket even more fascinating was where it was from. The back of the jacket had the great state of Ohio embroidered on it and below the FFA logo was the same exact school where my Facebook friend had graduated, as well as my Mom and Dad — Northridge High School in Licking County.Once this discovery was made, the gentleman was asked to stop and take a picture or two. Then, what everybody wanted to know was whose name was embroidered on the front of the jacket: John BevanTurns out Mr. Bevan graduated in 1977 (one year after my Dad and one year before my Mom) from Northridge High School. The guy in the picture, according to classmates on Facebook, was certainly not him. So, how in the world did his FFA jacket get halfway around the globe?“I held onto that jacket for almost 40 years and just last year I was in the process of moving,” Bevan said. “It wouldn’t fit me anymore so I asked my kids if they would like it and they said no, so it got packed up.”Eventually the bag that the jacket was stored in made its way to a Goodwill store in Texas, where Bevan now resides.“When I first saw it on Facebook with a guy in Italy wearing it I thought ‘Wow! How did it get there?’” Bevan said. “It was amazing.”Bevan grew up on a small farm in Croton, Ohio and worked for several area farmers throughout his youth. From the 1977 Northridge High School yearbook. John Bevan, sporting his FFA jacket, is top left.“Having that jacket and being in the FFA meant a lot to me,” Bevan said. “Being around the farm and being a part of the FFA gave me so many experiences that most people will never get and that I will never forget.”Bevan said even though it has only been a little over a year since he let his FFA jacket go, he wishes after seeing it on a stranger a half a world away that he could have it back.“There is no doubt that guy in Florence, Italy is looking better in that jacket than I would,” Bevan said. “When I could fit in that jacket, I had a beard very similar to that one and when I saw the pictures for the first time I thought it could be a younger version of me. It was very surreal. I wish I hadn’t let it go.”

Return to article. Long DescriptionSo, what do all these research findings mean? It appears that certain personality characteristics are associated with positive health and financial practices. Research studies mentioned factors such as conscientiousness, self-regulation, planning, and future-mindedness, which appear to be evident in multiple aspects of people’s lives.Financial educators and counselors should consider health and finance relationships in their professional work. A simple client query such as “Tell me what you are doing to take care of your health” could yield valuable insights. Activities that foster the personal qualities noted above can be incorporated into briefings and counseling sessions. An example is “Backwards Planning” to foster future-mindedness and sequential planning competencies. Use post-it notes to identify a sequence of steps that must be taken to get from Point B (a future goal) to Point A (today). Barbara O’Neill, Ph.D., CFP®[email protected] makes some people practice positive health and financial behaviors while others do not? Many people, including health and financial educators, policy makers, and behavioral researchers, are interested in knowing the answer to this question. Findings from recent research studies provide some interesting insights:A study found in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues found that households whose members tend to lead less healthy lifestyles are more likely to hold non-collateralized debt (e.g., outstanding credit card balances). Three possible explanations for this finding are common factors (e.g., personal preferences) affecting both finances and health, poorer health causing debt, and debt causing poorer health behaviors. An Applied Economics Research Bulletin article described a study that explored whether self-regulation, proxied by regularly dining together with family, is associated with better financial preparedness and greater wealth accumulation. Individuals who regularly ate meals together with their family increased their wealth at a faster rate than others and showed a greater preference for investment portfolio diversification. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published a study of 1,000 children from birth to age 32 and found that childhood self-control predicts physical health, substance dependence, personal finances, and offending outcomes. Effects were found regardless of intelligence and social class. The researchers recommended interventions to address self-control to save taxpayer dollars and promote prosperity.A study published in Psychological Science found that employees who participated in a 401(k) plan were more likely than their non-contributing counterparts to take action to correct poor physical health indicators indicated in an employer-sponsored health exam. The positive association between recommended health practices and retirement savings was attributed to individuals’ conscientiousness and time-discounting personality traits. The Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning published a study of associations between health information search behaviors and financial well-being. The researchers found that individuals who read the nutrition details of food labels were more likely than others to engage in five different retirement planning activities. Diet and physical activity were not significantly related to the financial planning, however. In a similar study published in the Journal of Human Sciences and Extension, respondents to an online self-assessment survey who reported reading nutrition labels had higher health and financial practice scores than others. In addition, respondents who had higher health practice scores had higher financial practice scores. The association of planning behavior and health and financial practices was described in a Journal of Financial Planning Online survey respondents who reported frequent planning behavior had higher health and financial practice scores than others and higher health and financial practice scores were positively related.
Ever get a sense of déjà vu in the movie theater? There’s a reason. These visually distinct locations have been featured in more movies than you might realize.Top image: Back to the Future III in Monument Valley, via UniversalThroughout the history of cinema, much of the world has been captured for the big screen. Hollywood has come to favor some of the more unique shooting locations, either famous already, or later recognized for their cinematic significance. Here are some of the most popular shooting locations that you might not have realized were reused.1. Redwood National and State ParksThe redwood forest in Northern California, known for hosting the tallest trees on Earth, has seen its fair share of screen time. Its most well-known appearance was as the forest moon of Endor in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Image via Shutterstock PremierThe redwoods have also been featured in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Outbreak, and Need for Speed, among many others.2. Monument ValleyWhile this iconic desert landmark in Utah is a bit more noticeably familiar than others on this list, it is possible you may have missed it. Monument Valley is synonymous with the classic Western, featured in the film that led John Wayne to success, Stagecoach, and much of John Ford’s other work.Image via Shutterstock PremierFord was arguably the most fond of the place, shooting there ten times throughout his career. A popular lookout point in Monument Valley was actually later named “John Ford’s Point.” Many others have included the unique landscape in their movies, such as Once Upon a Time in the West, Forrest Gump, and even 2001: A Space Odyssey.3. Bourne WoodThe Bourne Wood, located south of Surrey, England, saw its first on-screen appearance in 2000 with Gladiator. Image via WikiMediaWhile this remains its most famous use, the coniferous forest has since been used in over a dozen Hollywood productions, such as Children of Men, Band of Brothers, Captain America: The First Avenger, and the Harry Potter series.4. Quality CafeQuality Cafe, a classic diner in Los Angeles, has been featured in so many TV shows and movies that — whether or not you noticed it — you’ve probably seen it quite a few times.Image: (500) Days of Summer via Fox Searchlight PicturesCatch Me If You Can, Gone in 60 Seconds, Se7en, Million Dollar Baby, Old School, and Mad Men, to name a few, have all featured the Quality Cafe for a scene, though usually brief. While the restaurant is no longer in operation, it is still regularly used as a shooting set for exchanges of dialogue.5. Hatfield HouseServing as a generic but clearly authentic mansion, this estate in Hertfordshire, England, is perhaps most well-known for serving as Wayne Manor in Batman.Image via BestEventSelect parts of the building have been used in other films such as X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, and Get Him to the Greek.6. Bradbury BuildingThe Bradbury Building, though used as a shooting location since the 1940s, became an icon of science fiction culture after its use in Blade Runner.Image: Blade Runner via Warner BrosNormally the building is surprisingly different in appearance from the dim, grimy look it had in the Ridley Scott classic. It has since been used in films such as Lethal Weapon 4 and (500) Days of Summer.7. Greystone MansionGreystone Mansion, located in Beverly Hills, California, has hosted scenes in quite a few films. These include There Will Be Blood, X-Men, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, The Social Network, Eraserhead, and The Big Lebowski.Image via GreystoneMansion.orgKnown for its signature checkered floors and overall grandeur, this symbol of wealth will surely see plenty more screen time in the future.Hopefully your newfound awareness of these common shooting locations doesn’t distract you too much from your cinematic immersion. What are your favorite locations used in film production? Former fast bowler Geoff Lawson believes the current Indian attack is one the best he has seen in a long time and will challenge the Australian batsmen in the four-Test series.”They have got some terrific fast bowlers, as good a group as I’ve seen for a long time and they’ve got the spinners that always do the job,” Lawson was quoted as saying by reporters.”Ishant Sharma’s last time out here he got extra bounce. Umesh Yadav bowls freak (deliveries), Mohammed Shami has been swinging it, Bhuvneshwar Kumar swings it as well.”They are not going to play all four, they are going to play three and maybe one or two spinners,” Lawson said.Playing international cricket in the 1980s, Lawson has 180 Test wickets to his name, and he said starting the series in Adelaide will work in India’s favour.”The first Test (is) in Adelaide, so they got their wish there didn’t they, not playing in Brisbane or Perth.”They’ve got four good guys and they’ve got some extra pace so that will be a big challenge I’m expecting a really good series.”In the only warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI before the Test series, the prime candidates for India’s Test attack got a good workout with pacemen Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma all bowling over 20 overs and frontline spinner Ravi Aswhin sending down more than 30.(With PTI inputs)Also Read | India vs Australia: Murali Vijay signals his intent with quickfire hundred in Test warm-upAlso Read | India have a significant chance of beating Australia, feels Steve WaughAlso Read | India’s Test warm-up ends with hundred for Vijay and 62 for KL RahulAlso Read | Watch: Virat Kohli can’t stop laughing after getting a wicket in Test warm-up at SCGadvertisement
Paris: Angel Di Maria was hailed as “exceptional” after scoring twice against his former club as Paris Saint-Germain shrugged off the absences of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and thrashed Real Madrid 3-0 on Wednesday to get off to the perfect start in the Champions League. Di Maria beat Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at his near post to put PSG ahead in the 14th minute at the Parc des Princes, but it was his second goal just after the half-hour that really lit up this encounter. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over Chandigarh The Argentine, who starred for Real for four years and won the Champions League with them in 2014 before moving to Manchester United, gave Courtois no chance with a left-footed shot from 20 yards out that arrowed into the corner. Thomas Meunier added the gloss at the death but it was Di Maria who had cleared the way, stepping into the gap left by the injured Mbappe and Edinson Cavani as well as suspended Neymar. “We can’t be too surprised because he has been showing for more than a year now that he is capable of performances like that,” said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced later “He was exceptional tonight. He is always dangerous.” After a summer dominated by the saga of whether Neymar would leave, it was a reminder that the French champions have others capable of winning such games. These two clubs are trying to recover some of their lustre after disappointing campaigns in Europe last season, but for PSG this result is a measure of revenge for their defeat at the hands of Real in the last 16 the previous year. They remain unbeaten at home in the Champions League group stage since 2004 and they are already in control of Group A before facing Galatasaray and Club Brugge, who drew 0-0 on Wednesday. “Everyone was saying how could we win with all these players out but maybe that meant we were not the favourites and it can also help when you don’t feel too much pressure,” Tuchel added. – ‘No intensity’ – ================== Real remain far from convincing since Zinedine Zidane’s return for a second spell as coach of the 13-time European Cup winners. There is still much work to be done if they are to go deep in this competition again after being humbled by Ajax in the last 16 last spring. “PSG are a good team and created lots of chances but what worries me is that my team played without any intensity,” Zidane lamented as his team failed to muster a shot on target. “We didn’t really ever get going. We usually create lots of chances and today, well we scored two goals but both were disallowed. Apart from that there was nothing.” – Hazard makes little impact – ============================== They had a Gareth Bale goal disallowed for handball after a VAR review just after going two behind, while Eden Hazard struggled to make an impact on his first start since his move from Chelsea. Madrid were also handicapped by the absences of Sergio Ramos, Nacho and Marcelo in defence as well as Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric in midfield. PSG, confusingly wearing white while the visitors wore dark blue, opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Di Maria latched onto a Juan Bernat cutback from the left byline and fired in. Hazard shot just wide at the other end moments later and Bale curled a free-kick over the bar from the edge of the area. Just after that, in the 33rd minute, Di Maria took a touch and smashed a shot into the right-hand corner to make it 2-0. Then came Bale’s disallowed goal, and the Welshman came close again in first-half stoppage time, yet the Spanish giants created little in the second half apart from a Karim Benzema goal that was ruled out for offside. Hazard, meanwhile, departed 20 minutes from time having failed to make his mark, and PSG scored again in stoppage time, Meunier exchanging passes with Bernat before finishing. Both sides should still make it through but for now it is PSG, six months on from their horror show against Manchester United, who have more reason to be optimistic. Especially with so much firepower still to return.
