A group of emotionally-charged youths in the Township of West Point yesterday told our reporter that they (youth) of West Point were planning to petition government to name the township in honor of soccer legend George Manneh Weah. The youth, who numbered more than 30 people, paraded the streets of West Point and some parts of central Monrovia Saturday night, when results from polling centers started to filter in with indications that George Weah will be replacing outgoing former Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Senator Joyce Musu Freeman-Sumo for the Montserrado seat in the 53rd Senate. The group, headed by 21-year-old Mustapha Swaray, declared that almost 100% of residents of the township consider George Weah as a messiah who will finally redeem them from their neglected condition of education and sanitation. He said further that even the world’s richest man, Bill Gates, cannot survive politically in West Point, which is considered the soccer icon’s dominion.“There is no need to argue with our resolve to stay with Manneh for better or worse; even Bill Gates who is the world’s richest man cannot politically survive in George Weah’s West Point, and it will be a futile venture for anyone to attempt to sway our loyalty away from him.”Swaray maintained that for the first time in recent elections, West Pointers attended a confusion-free electoral process, adding that past confusions were ignited by the government.Displaying ID cards with photo of George Weah, the youths said: “We beat his (Robert Sirleaf) mother in 2005 and 2011, and if that was not enough now she has sent her son; she will never try our resolve again.”Polling at all voting centers in the township started a little behind time. But by mid-morning, voters sometimes in groups of five or ten, following the Ministry of Health’s Ebola regulation of washing hands and observing the election commissions’ request for voters to observe a-three feet space between electorates, started queuing up to cast their votes. Many political commentators are hailing what they believe is the first smooth and violence-free election in the Township of West Point.Thousands of the township’s residents are now bracing themselves in preparation for the announcement of a date for what they expect to be their biggest ever political victory march.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)
