A new form of accommodation which guests can perceive as an educational game where grasping the opportunity to discover the very secret elements of green living, without giving up on the comfort and the emotional side of a holiday. An experience which makes guests appreciate how all the aspects of sustainable building maximise the exploitation of the environment energies and resources. The project’s objective is giving rise to a new hotel accommodation system that is tightly interwoven with its environment and leads to the quality improvement of the global tourism offer through the combination of different modular solutions, from bungalows with bathroom to two-room apartments. GREEN_ZERO represents the result of the co-operation of companies sharing the same green DNA, which is indeed the real value added at the basis of the development and implementation of the whole concept. Save this picture!Courtesy of Studio di Architettura Daniele MenichiniThe GREEN_ZERO module is a prefabricated architectural system, in which the structural shell is made entirely from wood; it is provided with a frame and its stratigraphy, of both horizontal and vertical parts, is characterised by load-bearing and insulating elements, which allow the passage of installations, and the presence of an air chamber, created to obtain a specific assembly in accordance with climate conditions and thus being awarded the classification KlimaHaus A or KlimaHaus Gold. The cladding outer surface integrates a new thin photovoltaic panel system, which allows to supply the entire installation complex with the electrical power necessary to its functioning. The zinc-titanium membrane applied to this type of panel proves highly malleable and thus allows to perfectly fit the curved surfaces of the module and create all the technical elements fundamental to ventilation, management or recovery of rainwater.Save this picture!Courtesy of Studio di Architettura Daniele MenichiniOur responsibility towards the environment is in fact the leitmotif of the whole project, which blends the modular architecture of Green-Zero with the interior design of Naturalmente Chic: a double reference to both the “invisible project” and the “visible project”, meaning the building in its entirety, including the foundation and structural system, all installations and the use of local natural resources, as well as all finishing elements, lighting, furnishing and furniture, without forgetting the selection of suppliers and installers which have to ensure the highest possible standard of sustainability.Save this picture!Courtesy of Studio di Architettura Daniele MenichiniIn particular, the project’s sustainability comes in the foreground in several elements, such as the photovoltaic cells covering the outside surface of the shell and the use of water pumps with a maximum capacity of five litres per minute. All the rest is hidden underneath the “skin” of the shell, finally becoming its beating heart.Save this picture!Courtesy of Studio di Architettura Daniele MenichiniThe success of this sustainable project depends on the synergy among well-educated costumers, integrated planning processes, budget maximisation, project management and companies’ selection, all oriented towards the creation of a system which strives to be entirely sustainable, also in economic terms.Save this picture!Floor PlanProject gallerySee allShow lessUrban Shelter / MYCCSelected ProjectsIntuition: Your Best Design Tool?Articles Share ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOr Clipboard Photographs Naturalmente Chic / Studio di Architettura Daniele MenichiniSave this projectSaveNaturalmente Chic / Studio di Architettura Daniele Menichinilast_img read more

McKeon gives donations to help DeLay

first_imgSANTA CLARITA – Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon has donated $10,000 to House colleague Rep. Tom DeLay’s legal defense fund over the past year as the embattled Texas representative and former House majority leader faces money-laundering and conspiracy charges. McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, contributed the funds through his 21st Century PAC, a political action committee through which he raises money for Republican candidates and causes, his office said Friday. The first $5,000 donation was submitted in September 2004, with another $5,000 in July. McKeon, whose district includes the heavily Republican Antelope Valley, attended a re-election breakfast fundraiser for DeLay on Thursday in Washington, D.C., but made no further donations. “He supports and wants to help Mr. DeLay and help him fight these charges, which the congressman believes are false,” said Bob Cochran, McKeon’s chief of staff. Under Texas law, corporate money cannot be directly used for political campaigns, only for administrative purposes. DeLay, who resigned as majority leader in the House of Representatives after indictment in September, has pleaded not guilty. Pretrial hearings are scheduled after Christmas, with trial tentatively scheduled for January. McKeon’s Washington-based PAC has dished out $342,274 so far in the 2006 election cycle, according to, a Web site that tracks political contributions. It has funneled $164,500 to House Republicans, including $5,000 to DeLay’s re-election committee in April. The group received $394,673 so far for 2006, of which $248,650 came from donors who gave $200 or more, including various business and education interests. McKeon is a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Cochran said McKeon has been a longtime ally of DeLay, working with the Texas congressman during his years as party whip beginning in 1994. DeLay served as majority leader from 2002 until he resigned. “Obviously, (McKeon’s) contributions to both his campaign committee and legal defense fund is because he supports the (former) majority leader,” Cochran said. But for local Democratic activist Bruce McFarland, it’s cronyism. “It’s just the good ol’ boys taking care of each other,” said McFarland, president of the Democratic Alliance for Action. “McKeon obviously has no fear of (not) getting re-elected. … There are a lot of people who will vote for McKeon who don’t have a clue what he’s done, good or bad. “He is just a political minion to DeLay. … I’ve never heard him come out against any Republican leader on any issue.” DeLay’s legal defense fund is flush with donations – $318,020 was received between July 1 and Sept. 30 from at least 70 individuals and 35 corporations, political action and campaign committees, according to the Web site. That’s up from the $90,650 the fund received in the first six months of 2006. The Associated Press contributed to this report. BMW SA to export 3 Series to China

first_img10 August 2012BMW South Africa’s Rosslyn Plant outside Pretoria will begin exporting its 3 Series vehicles to China later this year, after receiving a China Quality Certification clearance permit from the authorities there last week.BMW South Africa is the first car manufacturer in the country to be awarded the permit since the establishment of the country’s Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) in 1995.The MIDP is a support programme aimed at the development of a sustainable, globally competitive automotive industry by providing South African manufacturers incentives such as a reduction on import duties.China is one of the fastest growing major markets in the world, and BMW sales in the country are growing by over 40% every year. “The South African-built vehicles will go a long way towards addressing the booming demand in this market,” BMW South Africa said in a statement. The Rosslyn Plant was awarded the China Quality Certification following a comprehensive audit which confirmed that the plant’s production and quality management systems met global standards. It follows a R2.2-billion upgrade of the plant, which re-opened in March this year. Its production capacity will increase significantly in the coming years to exceed 90 000 units per year, BMW South Africa’s managing director Bodo Donauer said.“The China certification is a great vote of confidence in our plant and our people. It bodes well not only for our sustainability as a company, but also for the broader motoring industry in South Africa,” Donauer said.“While our Chinese exports will start at a small level at first, the plan is for this market to ultimately make up around 10% of our total export volume. In 2012, we plan to export around 3 900 units to China.”The Rosslyn plant was the first BMW plant to be established outside Europe, in 1973. It currently exports 50% of the vehicles it produces to the USA, with the remainder going to local and African markets, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.“With more than R10-billion invested, BMW South Africa has led the local motor industry in a number of respects in terms of production and export,” the company said.“At the same time, BMW’s development of its production and export programme has been the catalyst for the company’s sustainable growth and contribution to the South African economy.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

From Japan, a museum of peace built on memories of WWII

first_imgJapan on Saturday gifted Manipur a museum of peace built on the memories of one of the fiercest battles of the Second World War.The inauguration of the Imphal Peace Museum at Red Hill, about 20 km southwest of Manipur’s capital Imphal, marked the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal. Some 70,000 Japanese soldiers, alongside those of Subhash Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army, died in battles with the British-led Allied forces in areas around Imphal and Kohima from March to June 1944. The last of these battles was fought at Red Hill, where the Japanese War Memorial was built in 1944 to mark the 50th anniversary of the battle.“While Imphal Peace Museum is a living memory of the tragic war, I sincerely hope that it will be a bridge to connect the past and the future for a lasting peaceful world for all times to come,” said Yohei Sasakawa, chairman of the Nippon Foundation that funded the museum. The 80-year-old Mr. Sasakawa recalled the suffering of war when he survived the Tokyo air raid in March 1945. He said that worst sufferers of in the Battle of Imphal were the local people who had little or nothing to do with the war.Diaries donatedHitoshi Tsuchiya, 64, was lucky to see his father Denkichi Tsuchiya who returned to Japan after the war. Mr. Hitoshi paid his first visit to Manipur with his son Jumpei to donate the diaries and other memorabilia of his father to the Imphal Peace Museum. Dominic Asquith, British High Commissioner to India, said, “This museum symbolises the reconciliation between Japan and Britain and Japan and India. It is to reinforce the message that history changes and makes us learn from the past.”His Japanese counterpart Kenji Hiramatsu agreed. “The Japanese know of the tragic past of the people of Manipur. But we have come to a point when we need to look at the future,” he said.Few would know this better than Nobuo Abe, a 77-year-old farmer turned collector of bones of fallen Japanese soldiers from across the world. His father, Soichi Abe, died at Red Hill on April 16, 1944, at the age of 30.Collecting bones“I was two-and-a-half years old when he died, and I do not remember his face as he left us for the war when I was a year old. Manipur will always be special to me because this is where my father died,” he said.A member of the Japan Bereaved Association, Mr. Abe could not find any of his father’s bones. “But I feel connected to him because I collect the bones of the fathers of my countrymen and women,” he said.According to Nippon Foundation’s Yosuke Ishikawa, a person’s bones are highly valued in Japanese culture.Among the highlights of the museum is a framed calligraphy by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. It reads ‘heiwa’ — meaning peace — in Japanese.last_img read more

AAP will do reasonably well in Haryana assembly polls Naveen Jaihind

first_imgUndeterred by the performance of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recent General elections in Haryana, its state party Chief Naveen Jaihind has begun the preparation for the state assembly elections. Often admired and even critiqued for his straightforward, aggressive speeches, Jaihind underlines the importance of struggle not only in politics but also in life. He is confident of his party workers with whom he works on the ground and to whom he encourages and motivates to make the citizens awaken of AAP is a new alternative in the state politics. Speaking candidly to Millennium Post correspondent Piyush Ohrie on the host of issues, Jaihind admits that AAP is still new in the politics of Haryana and it would take time for them to get fully mature. Nevertheless, he puts the onus on the Haryana voters to be aware of the major problems plaguing the state caused mainly by the poor governance by the present and past state governments. He sounds confident when he highlights the works of the AAP government in Delhi and asserts that this is his party biggest strength. Just like the previous elections, the odds are stacked against you. Many skeptics are not willing to give you a chance. In these challenging times how do you motivate your party workers and how are you garnering public support? Our party workers understand the importance of struggle. We have arisen from a people’s movement (India against Corruption) and have not forgotten our roots. We do not covet political posts instead we want to awaken the citizens of Haryana of how they have been failed repeatedly by the present and the previous government. We do not work with a defeated mindset. The AAP party worker understands the power of hope and the importance of the struggle. Just look at the challenges of the state — there is rising unemployment among the youth, the law and order situation is at its worse and the farmers have been cheated through Kissan Fasal Yojna. There is no 24 hour supply of electricity and water and the moral and social fabric of the state has been damaged by a large number of liquor vending units that have been opened to intoxicate the unemployed youth of the state. The works done by the AAP government in Delhi is our biggest strength. It is now for voters to decide that they will choose Kejriwal works or Khattar’s failed policies. Chief Minister on September 8 concluded Jan Aashirwad Yatra where he covered all the 90 assembly seats of Haryana. He claims it was a resounding success. How do you view the yatra? The Jan Aashirwad Yatra became a Jan Shraap Yatra (Citizens curse journey) when an unemployed man tried to commit suicide. On September 8 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the rally, there were a large number of seats lying vacant in his rally. Unemployment among the youth is the main area of concern for the party? What is your solution to tackling the problem? There are three ways by which the problems can be tackled. First, there is a huge vacancy in government jobs in the state. These vacancies should have been immediately filled. Second, there has to be an avenue for new investment in the state that will create job opportunities for the youth. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khatar may have boasted about various investment being brought in the state but on the ground there is nothing and as a result, there are no jobs. Thirdly, you have ensured corrupt practices, ineffectiveness, and delay in dispersing loans that have adversely affected the self-employment opportunities for the youth in Haryana. You have also raised your voice against liquor vending that have come up in large numbers in the state. For a state that is facing a challenge of a huge debt of over Rs one lakh crores why are you trying to stop a major source of revenue for the government? When you thought of Haryana it was doodh-dahi ka khana. It’s not like that anymore. Rising unemployment and spare time have resulted in the huge demand for the liquor vending units much against the wishes of various womenfolk. The revenue which the government gets in giving licenses gets wasted because of health problems, rising crimes and accident rates caused by increased consumption of liquor. What are your views about the BJP Government’s implementation of NRC if they come back to power again? This is a tactic adopted by the ML Khattar government to deflect the attention of Haryana voters from the main issues. The government should have released the white paper on the number of schools and hospitals they have opened that they have not done.last_img read more
