first_img162 Stanton Rd, Smithfield HeightsA REMARKABLE Far North “tower in a rainforest” is to be auctioned in coming weeks, almost 40 years after it was hand-built by an adventurous couple.According to a 1980 article from Vogue Living, the idea for the unique Stanton Rd property was conceived by the late John Lander, an accomplished builder, while driving from Adelaide to Cairns with his family.Mr Lander had a track record of building extraordinary homes, and this was to become his masterpiece. His son Peter, now based in Brisbane, remembers living in a caravan on-site while the Smithfield home was constructed during his teens.“Smithfield circa 1980 was not the same as Smithfield now, there wasn’t really much there at all,” he said. “It was a fantastic home for us … but circumstances have changed and it no longer serves a purpose for the family.“Hopefully someone else can now enjoy the property for many years to come.”Set on 4000sq m, the four-bedroom timber home enjoys sweeping views of the Far North coast and mountains.
