Landfill Manager at the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation Marcus Francis said during a press conference held recently that other countries may not be as advanced as Dominica.“Dominica from just discussing with other islands, is perhaps a step ahead in the “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse” program because we call all other islands to find out what they are doing and to see how they are doing certain items and we are finding out that in many cases they do not have the the time of program and they are not as advanced as we are. Solid Waste is about taking the lead and we are moving in that direction because we see value in it. In fact in the future the Corporation may be able to do some financial analysis of the reduce, reuse, recycle program and may be able to present to you in the future monetary values of investing in a recycle program, investing in this new philosophy and when you look at it you will realize that it was worth the effort.”Earlier this year The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation and Muller Concept a recycling firm from California signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the recycling of Solid Waste from Dominica with the theme “Recycle, Reduce, Reuse.”Muller Concepts agreed to recycle all plastic material, cardboards, paper and scrap metal from Dominica. The initiative will reduce the volume of waste disposed of at the Fond Cole Sanitary Landfill, reduce public health risk and protect the environmental integrity of the island. The collection, storage and disposal efforts of this initiative will target schools, householders and public and private businesses who are generators of waste. A programme for proper collection of recyclable items from these waste generators will be launched with a pilot programme in the Bath Estate/Elmshall area.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
