Wellington Heat gets swept by Hays Larks, falls to third in Jayhawk League

first_imgDodge City As280.20071L2-8 Jayhawk LeagueWLPCTGBSTREAKLAST 10 by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Rick Twyman, owner/head coach of the Wellington Heat, made an interesting statement after his baseball team was swept in a three-game series by the Hays Larks at Sellers Park.“I have never been swept at home in my 20-or-so years of coaching this team,” Twyman said.So it took a move to Wellington to see the Heat’s first home three-game losing sweep. Maybe Sellers Park is haunted. Home teams have not had a lot of luck at Sellers lately.Wellington was beat 13-2 Sunday evening in what was probably its most disheartening loss of the season. It was 3-2 after six and 4-2 after seven, before the roof fell in. Wellington gave up six runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth to make it look like a high school run-rule game. The Heat were beat 12-3 on Friday night to kick off the three game series, then fell to the Larks 8-5 on Saturday.“That’s a good team,” Twyman said of Hays. “They have all their infield back from last season. They are most certainly the most polished team we have seen this year.”With the loss, Wellington has fallen to third place in the Jayhawk League at 5-5 and 9-5 overall. Hays has improved to 9-1 in the league and is riding a 10-game winning streak.Wellington needs to only get in the top four of the Jayhawk to get into the NBC World Series, Twyman said. They will travel to El Dorado tonight at 7:05 p.m. and host the Derby Twins on Tuesday at Sellers Park in what will be “Super Hero” night. The game tonight in El Dorado is important for jockeying for position. The Broncos hold a one-game lead over the Heat, sweeping the Liberal BeeJays over the weekend.“That’s baseball,” Twyman said. “You see so many ebbs and flows throughout the season. This season is still very young.”Wellington did not have a good week. After beating Owasso in a non-league contest Monday, things started to unravel a bit Tuesday night. Wellington lost in Derby 14-9. The Heat did turn around and beat the Broncos 3-2 on Wednesday. But after a day off on Thursday, the Heat were swept by Hays.“We aren’t doing the little things that we were doing earlier this year,” Twyman said. “We aren’t taking care of the ball. Just making fundamental mistakes that we shouldn’t be making.”Sunday, the Heat made six errors in the game and gave up 17 hits. Hays wasn’t crisp either, committing three errors but held Wellington to seven hits.“How many people did we leave on base tonight,” Twyman asked rhetorically. “I’d guess 20 with two outs. You just can’t do that and expect to win.”Twyman attributes what is now seven players to the Major League Draft and injuries to Wellington’s lineup as the team’s problem lately. He said he expects to pick up three new pitchers this week.“There is a lot of baseball to be played,” Twyman said. “And what is typical of the Jayhawk League. We’ll beat up on one another.” Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password!
