Celtic 0-1 Maribor (Maribor win 2-1 on agg): Hoops crash out of Champions League

first_imgCeltic crashed out of the Champions League for the second time this season following a 1-0 play-off defeat to Maribor at Parkhead.Having come away from the away leg with a 1-1 draw and a crucial away goal, the Scottish champions failed to make the most of their home advantage as the Slovenian outfit secured a 2-1 aggregate victory to send the visitors through to the group stages. It’s not the first time the Bhoys have experienced the feeling of being dumped out of Europe’s premier competition this term. They were beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Legia Warsaw in the third qualifier but were reinstated after the Polish club were effectively thrown out by UEFA for fielding a player who should have been suspended in the second leg at Murrayfield. The Hoops were surely confident of taking thier second chance by the reigns following the away stalemate, but a poor opening 45 minutes saw the hosts booed off at half-time.The introduction of Kris Commons, a surprise omission from the startling line-up, at the start of the second half saw a vast improvement. But Maribor skipper Tavares grabbed the crucial goal in the 75th minute, costing the Parkhead club around £20million in revenue but much more in reputation as the spotlight falls on boss Ronny Deila.Celtic will now go into the draw for the Europa League – but that will be scant consolation for the angry Hoops fans who made their feelings known at the final whistle. 1 Celtic players react after being knocked out of the Champions League for the second time this season last_img
