Karanka makes promise to Middlesbrough fans following Riverside stay

first_imgMiddlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has promised to fight for his players and the club, insisting that he never wanted to leave the Riverside.The Spaniard looked to be heading for the exit last week, when he left a team meeting at the training ground in a surprising turn of events.Karanka was not in charge as Boro were defeated 2-0 by Charlton on Sunday, but the club announced on Monday evening that he would be returning to Teesside with immediate effect.The 42-year-old is now keen to put the episode behind him and get his side’s bid for promotion to the Premier League back on track.Karanka said: “They have been strange days for the people who have not been involved in the situation.“The club and me had everything clear. I want to make it clear that the club never thought to sack me and I never wanted to leave. It wasn’t the case, it’s not the case and I am going to fight for these players and this club as I have done to this moment.“When you hear something that was hurting – especially my family, because they are in Spain and it was difficult for them because they thought I hadn’t told them the truth because I wanted to protect them. When they found me calm at home, it was difficult for them.“But it’s the past. We have to look forward. We have an amazing month in front of us, we have some amazing fixtures, some amazing games at home, so we will keep going.”Middlesbrough host a top of the table clash on Friday evening, as second placed Boro take on third placed Hull City.A win for Karanka’s men would move them to within four points of league leaders Burnley, and would open the gap between themselves and the Tigers to five points as the season heads into its final stages.
